Assist. Prof. Mirjana Babić Leko

Mirjana Babić Leko is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, University of Split. During the past few years, she has been intensively and directly involved in neuroscience research. Her past work included the analysis of protein and genetic biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the role of monoaminergic system in AD, and the role of metals and metalloids in AD. She participated in the validation of non-invasive test for spatial orientation necessary for early detection of AD. She also participated in the development of in vitro and in vivo models of AD. Except in the field of neurodegenerative disorders, she participated in research of brain development, schizophrenia, the genetic basis of addiction, and spinal muscular atrophy. During post-doctoral training, she learned advanced statistical methods required for the performance of genome-wide association studies and she performed surgeries on experimental animals. Her recent research work also included the analysis of genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the development of thyroid diseases.
